Addressing Social and Emotional Needs of Students and Staff: Part One

About This Event:

Participants will complete this four-session series with a unique plan to move their local school and/or district toward a healthier, more nurturing culture that is trauma-informed and meets social and emotional needs of students and staff. Approximately one-third of the series will be content, one-third will be interaction with other participants around the content, and one-third will be application of content to participants’ local school or district’s unique needs. Participants will be asked to practice strategies and reflect on their practice between sessions. Practice should not require allocation of additional time; but should be embedded in typical job responsibilities. For maximum benefit, a school or district team will attend the series together. The team may include school board members, district and building administrators, teacher leaders, counselors, social workers, SROs, and/or parents or community members who are part of a building site team or other advisory group. Individuals who are unable to attend with other team members will leave the series with a plan to engage their local team when they return to their district.

Series content includes:

  • Impact of difficult life experiences on staff and students’ physical and emotional health, behavior, and learning;
  • Adult and student bullying behavior and its impact on and reflection of culture;
  • Leadership of an organization changing its culture from pre-trauma aware to trauma-informed,
  • Recognizing leaders and other adults’ management of their emotions and energy levels and its impact on culture;
  • Using the principles of trauma-informed organizations including safety; trustworthiness and transparency; collaboration; peer support; voice, choice, and empowerment; and cultural, historical and gender issues to change culture;
  • Assessment, data collection, goal setting, monitoring, and sustainability;
  • Parent engagement and building community within the school and district; and
  • Coaching for change and sustainability.
