Impact of Trauma on Student Success (Topeka)

About This Event:

This interactive three-hour workshop will provide board members and district leaders awareness of and insights about the impact of exposure to violence and other traumatic events on students’ physical and emotional health, behavior, and learning. Trauma-informed schools help students build the resiliency needed to manage the challenges they will face in the future. Awareness of the impact of trauma on student success is the first step in the journey to create resilient school communities.

We will begin with a brief overview of the underlying research including the landmark ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) study. Topics will include the effects of trauma on brain architecture and resulting behaviors, generational trauma, and the significance of adult management of their emotions and energy levels on student success. Participants will discuss principles of trauma-informed organizations including safety; trustworthiness; collaboration; peer support; voice, choice, and empowerment; and cultural, historical and gender issues as they relate to interventions, practices and policy development.
