This workshop will focus on legal aspects of student-related issues. Topics will focus on the most current issues faced by Kansas schools, national trends and proactive planning to avoid legal challenges. 

8:30 a.m. Student Discipline Building Blocks: Overview of Student Discipline Statutes, Including Notice and Hearing Requirements. 

9, 9:45, 10:45, 11:30 Breakout Sessions. Topics include:

School Consequences for Out of School Actions: Discussion of the “nexus to school” requirement / Addressing threats, social media and other current issues

Discipline of Special Education Students: The discipline process for special education students, highlighting legal obligations to those students, and contrasting those with general education procedures.

Policy and Handbooks in Student Discipline Matters

Role of SROs and Law Enforcement in Schools: Limitations on law enforcement in schools / Requirements for Parental Notification
