KASB Board, Legislative Committee, Workers Comp Board will conduct meetings on Saturday

KASB’s Board of Directors, Legislative Committee and Workers Compensation Board of Trustees will hold their quarterly meetings this weekend in Topeka.

The Board of Directors is comprised of four elected officers (president, past-president, president-elect and president-elect designee) and 15 regional vice presidents. Shannon Kimball of Lawrence USD 497 is this year’s President. Past-President C. Patrick Woods of Topeka USD 501 serves as the Legislative Committee Chair. Lori Blake, Southeast of Saline USD 306, is KASB President-Elect.

The regions include 10 geographic areas and five additional regions representing the five member school districts with the largest full-time equivalent enrollment at the time of regional elections.

The Board and the Legislative Committee, which is also comprised of members from each geographical region and the five largest school districts, will meet Saturday morning for updates on advocacy activities, the summer regional roundtables, KASB policies, a building construction update and preparations for KASB’s Annual Convention in December. The leaders will also hear from NSBA Western Region Vice President and Seaman USD 354 Board Member Frank Henderson about the National School Boards Association’s Executive Directors Summer Institute, Summer Leadership Seminar, and the 2019 Western Region Seminar.

The Legislative Committee will meet separately for its first meeting of the 2020 legislative policy cycle to review the results of the 2019 Kansas legislative session and member feedback from the summer regional roundtables. The committee will discuss whether KASB’s legislative policy positions should be updated and develop proposed policy language to present to member districts during the fall Regional Meetings in September and October. The committee will meet in November to finalize proposed policies that will be voted on by the Delegate Assembly at the Annual Convention on December 8 in Wichita.

The KASB Workers Compensation fund is a wholly owned subsidiary of KASB. It was established in 1987 to provide KASB members with affordable, reliable insurance. All claims and investigations are done in-house and issues can be addressed directly. All service renewals and decisions are handled locally. Coverage is available for KASB members even when insurance may otherwise be difficult to obtain. The Pool has never canceled or not provided a bid to a KASB member. The Pool is administered by KASB Risk Management and is only available to KASB members. The Board of Trustees meets quarterly to provide oversight of the fund.
