KASB’s Daily Education Roundup, Mon. March 18

KASB is urging school leaders to contact their legislators and urge them to support SB 142, which will be heard Tuesday (March 19) in the House K-12 Education Budget Committee.

SB 142 includes the funding for the inflation adjustment that has been endorsed by the State Board of Education, Gov. Laura Kelly, KASB and numerous other education groups. It was approved last week on a bi-partisan 32-8 vote in the Senate.

On Monday, the House K-12 Education Budget Committee closed the hearing on HB 2395, which KASB, numerous education groups and the Mainstream Coalition opposed. Here is a link to KASB’s testimony.

Speaking in support of HB 2395 on Monday were Walt Chappell, former State Board of Education member; Chuck Knapp, who is head of the Jobs for America’s Graduates-Kansas, and representatives of the Kansas Chamber and Cerner Corp. Kansas Policy Institute testified as neutral, saying it would have supported the bill, but it provided too much school funding.
