Lyons USD 405 has provided an open invitation to lunch for first responders of the Lyons Police Department and Rice County Sheriff’s Office after a shooting injured Rice County Sheriff Bryant Evans and Undersheriff Chad Murphy.
Lyons Middle School counselor Anna Cannon called Superintendent Bill Day with her lunch invitation idea, KWCH reported.
“I mean, they have been in my office to work with my kids and they’ve come to lunch to be with kids, so what a better way to honor them with lunch,” Cannon said.

Sheriff Evans was shot in the leg in an exchange of gunfire with David Madden, a 37-year-old former Marine. Madden had earlier shot Murphy four times during a traffic stop, authorities said. After that shooting, Madden drove to his father’s home in Alden and shot and killed his 65-year-old father, Thomas Madden. David Madden, who had been under investigation for the 2015 disappearance of his girlfriend, then killed himself after a standoff, authorities said.
