Registrations up for KASB Annual Conference

After local school board elections and the appearance of numerous education issues on the horizon, registrations are up for the 2019 KASB Annual Conference.

As of Tue. Dec. 3, there were 551 school board members and school administrators registered to attend the Dec. 6-8 conference at the Hyatt Regency & Century II Convention Center in Wichita. That’s the highest total since 2009 when 658 registered.

The conference is the largest gathering in the state of local school board members and offers a wide range of activities, breakout sessions and nationally-recognized keynote speakers designed to help local school board members fulfill their constitutional duty of operating public schools to educate each child to their full potential.

In a recent study commissioned by KASB, networking and learning from other districts were cited as the top reasons for education leaders to attend the conference. The survey also led to programming changes aimed at providing more intensive learning experiences.

In touting the importance of the conference, KASB President Shannon Kimball, who is a member of the Lawrence USD 497 board, recently wrote, “We are all better board members when we learn together and from each other, and ultimately our students and staff will benefit greatly from the time and resources we commit to our own learning.”

The conference starts with pre-conference activities that include Meeting All Kids Needs district tours, Foundations of Boardsmanship, Winter School Law, Poverty Simulation and Kansas School Superintendent’s Day.

Saturday offers a trade show and more than 40 breakout sessions covering important topics for education leaders. Experts will lead discussions on vaping, school redesign, a legislative preview, improving district climate, responding to criticisms of public education, teacher retention, school safety and more.

The conference concludes Sunday with the Delegate Assembly, which handles business and elections for the association. For more information and registration, go to this link.
