New chairs on House Education committees for 2019 sessionScott Rothschild
House Education Committees that will deal with school funding and other K-12 issues have new chairs and members for the 2019 Legislative Session that starts Jan. 14.
Under committee assignments announced by House leaders, Rep. Kristey Williams, R-Augusta, will chair the K-12 Education Budget Committee with Kyle Hoffman, R-Coldwater, serving as vice chair and Valdenia Winn, D-Kansas City, serving as the ranking minority member.
In recent years, the K-12 Education Budget Committee has been the main committee in the Legislature dealing with school finance legislation. It will likely continue in that role as legislators face a deadline from the Kansas Supreme Court to add approximately $364 million as an inflation adjustment to K-12 funding.
The committee has a lot of education experience. Williams is a former teacher and Winn serves on the Kansas City USD 500 school board. Committee members Brenda Dietrich, R-Topeka, and David Benson, D-Overland Park, are former school superintendents while Renee Erickson, R-Wichita, is a retired educator, and Jim Ward, D-Wichita, is a former school board member.
Fred Patton, R-Topeka, who had chaired the K-12 Education Budget Committee in recent years, will now chair the House Judiciary Committee, which will likely be the committee that considers any proposed constitutional amendment on school funding. Patton also serves on the Seaman USD 345 board and is a past KASB president.
The House Education Committee, which generally considers policy issues, such as teacher due process rights, will now be led by Rep. Steve Huebert, R-Valley Center, who is a former school board member. The vice chair will be Dietrich and the ranking minority member is Ward. The committee also includes Jim Karleskint, R-Tonganoxie, a former superintendent and Cheryl Helmer, R-Mulvane, a longtime educator. Huebert replaces Clay Aurand, R-Clay Center, who did not seek re-election.
