Being Brian: Using District Values to Lead with Purpose
Throughout my career, I’ve had the chance to see the incredible work of school boards across the state. One of the most important things I’ve learned along the way is just how essential it is to keep values at the heart of every decision. It’s not always easy, but aligning actions with values is key to staying on course, fulfilling your mission and genuinely serving your students and communities.
Values are the foundation of strong boards. They guide choices that reflect what really matters to the people you represent. When board members are united around a clear set of values, it’s much easier to tackle tough challenges and make decisions that keep you moving toward your goals.
Defining those values starts with listening. As elected representatives, board members bring the voices of students, parents, educators and community leaders to the table. What do they see as the most pressing needs for students? How does your community define success for its students?
Whether the focus is on hands-on learning, more equitable access to resources or fostering innovation, these questions shape your core values.
But defining values is just the beginning—living by them is where the real work happens. It’s not enough to simply believe in something; values have to guide decisions about budgets, policies, and new programs. This might mean asking, “Does this support our commitment to student success?” or “Will this decision bring us closer to our goals?” Staying grounded in these values helps avoid distractions from personal preferences or short-term pressures.
Of course, putting values into practice isn’t always easy. There will be tough choices and disagreements. That’s why it’s so important for boards to have open, honest discussions about what’s valued and how to apply those values practically. When disagreements arise, shared principles provide a way to find common ground.
At the end of the day, a board’s strength comes from a shared purpose and a commitment to seeing it through. By defining values, sharing them clearly and holding each other accountable, boards are better equipped to make decisions that truly benefit students and communities. It’s challenging work, but it’s the foundation for effective governance and lasting impact.
