Being Brian: Staff Appreciation and Support in the Classroom and Beyond

School districts often become so focused on improving outcomes and achievements that they overlook the crucial role that staff happiness and dedication play in student success. Teaching isn't just a job; it's a calling driven by passion. But passion alone isn't enough to keep our educators thriving. With years of experience in education, I've seen firsthand how important it is to make sure staff feel valued and supported.

As board members, you shape the direction and priorities of your district. However, it’s important to remember that teachers and staff are the heart and soul of our schools. They bring invaluable skills, talents and expertise that keep our schools running effectively. Our educators desire recognition, a sense of belonging and a supportive community where their challenges and triumphs are acknowledged.

As we continue to strive for student success and excellence in Kansas, we must make staff appreciation and support a top priority.

What Can the Board Do?

  • Listen and Connect: Find ways to listen to and hear from staff. They want to feel supported, valued and heard. This can also help foster a sense of partnership in shaping the school's vision. Find time to get into the building as a board and connect with staff, so you can see firsthand how they go about their work.

  • Foster Staff Connection: Ensure that staff feel connected to their colleagues and can build a strong support system. This comes through clear expectations that a great culture within each school throughout a district is a priority.

  • Prioritize More Than Salary: While salary is important, it's not the only factor that matters to employees. Your staff likely put greater value into a great learning environment, professional growth opportunities and access to resources.

  • Recognize and Reward: Providing them with a voice in education, supporting them through resources, and acknowledging their achievements are all vital. Recognize when they go above and beyond in their roles.

During my time working in schools, I've encountered several examples that show the importance of recognizing staff and involving them in decisions that impact them.

When I was a principal, there was a janitor named Jay whose kindness and compassion extended far beyond his custodial duties. When he took a troubled student under his wing and provided mentorship and support, the impact on the student's behavioral issues was undeniable. By acknowledging Jay's dedication and empathy, we not only validated his efforts but also inspired others to go above and beyond in their roles.

Similarly, when we allowed our staff to have a say in their professional learning through a teacher committee, it had a ripple effect on morale and engagement. By providing opportunities for staff to choose their own learning paths and contribute to the development of the professional learning calendar, we showed them our trust and confidence in their expertise and professional judgment.

Planning for the Future…

  • Build Relationships with Local Businesses: Partner with local businesses to recognize and reward staff efforts and contributions. Collaborating with external stakeholders can enhance staff morale and strengthen community ties.

  • Consider Needs Beyond the Classroom: Remember to consider all the needs of your employees, including their wellness—both physical and mental. Staff want to feel valued and cared for as whole people, not just as employees, and not only within the four walls of the school building.

  • Community Engagement: Highlight the amazing work of your staff to the broader community. Recognition that celebrates milestone achievements and exceptional staff contributions can be shared through various channels, such as social media, newsletters or community events. This not only acknowledges staff excellence but also promotes positive community engagement.

  • Make it Personal: Board members can make a significant impact by personally thanking individuals who have gone above and beyond their duties.

By prioritizing staff recognition and ensuring they receive the support they deserve, you're fostering a positive school environment where everyone feels valued and motivated—educators, staff, and students alike.
