Leading with Purpose: Reflections Ahead of School Board Election Day
By Kevin Cole, KASB President
The upcoming Election Day on Nov, 4, brings with it significant opportunities as citizens across Kansas vote for positions across our 280+ school boards. The impact of these elections will be felt differently in every community and district. Whether seats are contested, candidates run unopposed or incumbents face challengers, candidates are motivated by a deep commitment to their community, students, teachers and staff.
Candidates are running for many reasons. Maybe a desire for change or a response to recent events where they felt leadership needed to better resolve issues. We frequently hear calls for transparency, accountability and improved communication. While these sound simple, their correction is complex, deeply interwoven with each district’s unique culture, existing leadership and the dynamics of the board itself.
As new board members prepare to join their teams in January, understanding the power of a school board and its direct impact on student success is paramount.
- Be Patient and Learn: Take the time to thoroughly understand the complex issues facing your district, including challenges stemming from state and federal resources. Ask questions and seize every learning opportunity available.
- Connect and Collaborate: Reach out to board members in neighboring communities. Your district's challenges are likely shared by others, and collaboration fosters shared solutions.
- Your Influence is Significant: As you join the largest group of elected officials in the state, remember your voice and actions will shape the district's reputation.
- Remember the Team Dynamic: As an elected school board member, your voice is one of the most powerful constituencies. Always remember, you are one of seven. Decisions will be made, and it’s acceptable to agree to disagree when consensus isn't reached.
Current board members have navigated significant turbulence, from complex school finance issues to managing the challenges of the COVID pandemic. This experience has forged stronger leaders, and the growth must continue. New challenges will inevitably arise, and leaders must be prepared to take them on head-on.
For every member who dedicates countless hours, tackles tough issues, are often criticized for decisions made without knowing all the facts, thank you. The reward of student achievement truly is priceless.
My own experience, now in my 11th year on the USD 506 Labette County Board of Education, serving on the SEK Interlocal 637 Board (including 6 years as President), and 7 years on the KASB Board of Directors (currently as President) has reinforced that the work we do is critical for setting students, teachers, administrators and staff up for lifelong success.
Thank you to all who serve. Your dedication is making a difference, one student at a time.
