Being Brian: Creating Policies that Guide Student Success
In a world where progress is constant, updating education policies is essential to continue providing the best environment for student success. KASB provides our members policy updates twice a year based on state regulations and laws. These updates can provide basic guidance for boards, but each district must create its own policies.
The Board of Education shoulders the responsibility of continuously working on policy to ensure that they remain responsive, adaptable, and effective. Policy provides the framework for the current needs of the students and boards should evaluate how the policies reflect the community’s values and beliefs. Policy is the compass that guides the direction of your district. It is impossible to think of every possible scenario when writing policy, so it is important to try to be aware of any unintended consequences of the policies and know that policy interpretation can differ on a case-to-case basis.
To create a cohesive and efficient educational system, it is imperative that all board policies are aligned and clearly reflected in all school documents. This alignment ensures consistency, clarity, and a shared understanding among educators, administrators, students, and parents. When policies are seamlessly integrated into various documents such as student handbooks, teacher guidelines, and administrative procedures, it eliminates ambiguity and establishes a unified framework for decision-making and implementation. Even handbooks and rules created by teachers and coaches must align with any official policies that the Board has set.
The worst time to change policy is in the middle of a crisis. It is imperative that districts constantly review and update policies to stay up to date with society and the community they serve. It is an excellent idea to establish a standing policy committee or process that focuses on conducting a comprehensive evaluation of existing policies, examines alignment with educational goals, and assesses their impact on students, teachers, and the overall learning environment. The review process should include gathering feedback and analyzing data, such as academic performance metrics and graduation rates. Through this process, you can ensure that your policies remain responsive to evolving needs and provide the best educational experience for your community.
Any time your Board of Education officially acts or makes a decision on an issue that becomes policy. Good policies are a guideline to help students succeed, so it is important to be aware of the policies and how they affect students and the community, remain consistent in all school documents, and continuously review and update old policies.
