BOLD Cohort Begins Year of Leadership Growth and Real-World Learning

The 2026-27 Building Outstanding Leaders in Districts (BOLD) cohort is off to a strong start after two days of immersive learning focused on leadership, strategic thinking and district operations. Twenty-five cohort members from across Kansas gathered this fall to begin a yearlong journey designed to prepare and inspire the next generation of educational leaders.
The opening session challenged participants to reflect on their own leadership strengths, identify opportunities for growth and explore the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to lead complex school systems. Just as importantly, the cohort began building a statewide network of peers who will learn from and support one another throughout the year.

The second day moved leadership concepts into practice with a visit to Perry-Lecompton USD 343. Participants experienced firsthand how strategic priorities, facility planning and day-to-day operations connect to student success. The district's willingness to share its experiences provided valuable insight into the realities of leading school systems and translating long-term vision into action.
Members also explored district financial health and the critical role financial stewardship plays in effective leadership. Thanks to the expertise shared by KASB partner, Piper Sandler, cohort members gained a deeper understanding of the factors that influence district decision-making and long-term planning.
What makes BOLD unique is its blend of leadership development and practical, real-world learning. Throughout the year, participants will dive into some of the most complex and important operational responsibilities school leaders face, including facilities planning, bond projects, construction delivery methods, finance options, transportation, risk management, human resources, technology, special education and career and technical education.
These learning opportunities are made possible through strong partnerships with school districts and industry experts who share their specialized knowledge and experiences with the cohort. By connecting participants with experienced practitioners and successful district leaders, BOLD helps bridge the gap between theory and practice while developing leaders who are ready to tackle the challenges of modern school systems.
As future sessions take participants to districts across Kansas, cohort members will continue building both their leadership skills and operational expertise, equipping them to lead with confidence, make informed decisions and better serve students, staff and communities across the state.
